SONIC DOLLZ
The SONIC DOLLZ from Hungary have put out an amazing demo
CD that most rock'n'rollers (from punks to psychobillies to metal heads)
can enjoy (read more), I've asked Blondie
(vocals/guitars) to answer a few questions and I can tell you that he's a
fast cat! You should know more about them after reading what
follows...
Can you introduce the Sonic Dollz? Do some people
sometimes think that you're the punk rock band called Sonic Dolls?
The Sonicdollz are located in Hungary and formed at the end of 2000.
The band members are Franky13 (Bass/Vox) Jimm Sonikk (Drumz/Vox) and me {Blondie
(Vox/Gutar)}. Last month a new member's arrived in the band. The guy's called
Marky Fixx (Guitar/Vox), and now the band sounds much better with two guitars.
Marky can sing really well and the choirs are stronger too. So back where
i started ! We formed this band only for fun, and for a special cover song
show. All of us played since a long time in other bands (Me&Franky were
members of a glam band S.L.A.N.G., and Jimm played in a dirty r'n'r band
Harlot). We had only one rehearsal before the gig and we played songs from
our big favourites like The Ramones, Misfits, Clash,etc.. After the gig we
thought it was really cool and that we should continue it and stay together.
We quit our previous bands and are rocking together since then. Our style
is Glam/Punk/R'n'R. We are influenced by bands like The Ramones, Motley Crue,
Faster Pussycat, Johnny Thunders, Iggy and the Stooges, New York Dolls, AC/DC
and we are huge fans of the 50s style rockabilly music and psychobilly too.
We are trying to mix all of our influences and doing something cool. We aimed
to do pretty energetic live shows and write songs full of energy and catchy
choruses. In our gigs there are fans with big mohawks but there are the girls
too and they shake their asses to our songs. We want the people to leave
their seat and start dancing and have fun! To answer the second question,
yeah after we just came out with the EP i got a letter from the German punkband
Sonic Dolls, and they said what a great name we have!:-)) But they were totally
cool and we discussed the possibility to do gigs or a split EP together.
It would be fine ! But since then we are really considering to change our
name. If we move out from Hungary i think we should do it coz for example
in Germany lots of people know Sonic Dolls and it can be really confusing
for everyone.
Blondie, you also play in Suckerstarz, do you manage to play in both bands
easily? Do you have a priority? Yeah, and if i want to be honest with
you i have a third band here in Hungary named Zorall in which we play old
hungarian songs in punk style. It's something common like Me First And The
Gimme Gimmes but with old hungarian songs in hungarian language! I dont have
to sit at home often and think about what to do! Haha I can manage it coz
i love to play music. All the three bands are different and i love to play
with all of the guys in these bands. I haven't had to think about the priorities
'til now. As you maybe know in Suckerstarz i play together with two French
guys so the rehearsals and all the things are not easy to organize. In Sonicdollz
all of us lives near to each other so i spend most of my time to work with
this band.
There are many different influences in your music,
is it mainly because the members all have different musical tastes or because
you listen to various kinds of rock ? I think the reason behind this
is that i'm a musical junkie and i got plenty of influences. In Sonicdollz
i write all the songs - music and lyrics as well. Usually i put together
a song, write the lyrics, write the vocal harmonies show it to the guys and
we make the last touches together. I love all types of music which has style
and comes from the soul ! I love glam, i love punk, i love rocknroll/rockabilly,
i'm a huge fan of Elvis, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and i love Swing, i
love the oldies like The Beatles, Stones, too. To tell you the truth sometimes
i feel im some kinda retro guy. I hate all these nu metal boybands and i
can't stand the grunge bands too. Even disco music was much better in the
70-early 80`s era then the pop groups now. They could sing, they could play
on their instruments. God bless the real rock'n'roll bands like the Hellacopters,
Backyard Babies or Gluecifer
they have style and they have fucking
great songs . I love the Scandinavian scene. It such a shame that here in
Hungary it's absolutely underground.
Do you often play shows in your country? in what kind
of places? We usually play every two weeks with Sonicdollz. In the
summertime we did a few festivals and in the autumn the club season starts.
We're gonna do a short tour and we got a few invitations from other bands
to play together. It seems that we will play frequently til the end of this
year in our country. In Hungary most of the bands like us play in clubs.
There's only one or two rockband here who is popular enough to fill a big
hall. So we're nightclubbing just like Iggy said.
The song "Nightcrawler" is about Freddy Krueger, are
you horror movies fans? Yeah, i really dig the horror movies. I remember
when i was a small kid and first saw Nightmare on Elm Street (i think it
was the second episode) i couldn't sleep well for a week. :-)) I Love Freddy
coz he has style and i think he's looking good !! I love horror movies but
unfortunately these days there aren't too much really good stuff in this
style. The computerized tricks fucked up the horror scene. But Freddy was
always my favourite especially the first three episode so i thought it would
be cool to write a song about him.
More generally, what are the themes of your
songs? Most of our songs are about girls. But in a tongue-in-cheek"
style. I see all the relationships in a really cynical way and i can tell
you, i went through so weird things that it gives me inspiration for the
next 10 records. Hahaha For example lyrics of songs like Broken, Psychopunch,
Ball and chain is taken from my experiences. And there is Backseat Love which
i dedicated to the mighty Ramones one of my biggest favourites. I tried to
write it musically and lyrically in the same vein as the Ramones would do
it. I know that noone can do it as well as they did but its some kind of
a thank you for them. Did you know that Tommy Ramone is Hungarian? And there's
Heartbreaker which is about my favourite porn star Jenna Jameson . She wears
a Heartbreaker tattoo on her ass. I'm a Jenna addict and thought i could
write a song about her.
The title of your demo is "Better be dead... than fit
in the trend", can you tell us about it? What do you see as the trend
nowadays? If we talk about present rock music then Nu-metal is absolutely
trendy. I'm sick about the music, the look, and everything about this Nu
shit and there are those new wave grunge bands like Puddle of mudd, POD.
It's sooo fucking boring. Here in Hungary every rockband tunes down his guitars
to C and play those bullshit hip-hop metal . I can tell you we're the only
band here who say that we are a glam/punk band. And when most of the people
first hear glam they say
"oh man, glam, fucking girl-look-a-like posers,
hasn't it died in 89??" And then they listen to our EP and says "hey its
cool !!"
Most of the people can't have the chance to meet this type
of music in the media, so they think its shitty just because they've read
it somewhere, and they dont even know how does it sound like, and whats is
this all about. We do this glam type music since ten years with different
bands, and if we would have started to play trendy music 5 years ago we could've
been much more popular.. but "Better be dead... than fit in the trend" !!
I've always loved bands who stayed true to themselves, and not sold themselves
or jumped in a bandwagon.
What are the projects of the band? Our plans
are to get outside of Hungary. We want to play everywhere possible in Europe.
It seems that we're gonna record 7 or 8 songs at the end of this year and
release a full length LP. We have several songs that we couldn't record only
because the lack of money. And of course our goal is to reach more and more
fans with our music in Hungary and everywhere. We want to be fukkin huge
rock'n'roll stars ... that's why we are doing this !!
:-))
Can you conclude? I still believe that music,
which is about loud guitars, energy, strong choruses, attitude and fun, hasn't
died yet and it can grab people's attention again. Give us a try, check out
