SHINY MAMA 'S/T' compilation CD.
(Official Website)
I really
didn't know what to expect from a band with such a name! So here's
a bit of history since it's an interesting one:Yana (lead singer)
came from Russia (with love) to the US at age 10, she later went to
Forest High School (the High School of the RAMONES) and started PMS,
one of the first all-girl punk rock bands on the Lower East Side of
Manhattan. Then she fronted WRENCH, a metal core band that toured
Europe. Yana's band SHINY MAMA also has former SNAPDRAGONS and SPACEHOG
members. This compilation album I got contains two Eps. The first
song "Honey Bear" reminds me of BLONDIE (especially on the
verse) and this vocal influence can be found in a few other songs
as well as other ones like PAT BENATAR. Yes, Yana can really sing!
whether the style is pop or more hard rock like in songs such as "I
Love You"(and its STOOGES-like guitar riff) or "Evil Lover".
The band also plays a good cover of RAINBOW's "Long Live Rock'n'Roll"
and an interesting version of BOWIE's "Soul Love".Even
though I can't say that I like each and every song on here, this compilation
CD is quite enjoyable and shows us that this band has a really big
potential that should be used on a real first album. Get it if you
like good female singers, you won't be disappointed.
