'Spooky
Sugar' is such a good album that we couldn't resist asking a few questions
to Gary Strutt (guitars) about his band the SCIENCE FICTION IDOLS. Yeah,
things are that simple sometimes.
Can
you give us a little history of the band?
Bobby formed the band in 1999, but the original line-up broke up soon
after. Angel O & Greg Brancati joined up in the summer of 2001, then
I (Gary Strutt) joined up in the fall of 2002. Harrison Dray replaced
Greg in November of 2003. The original lineup released the debut CD
in 2000, then "Spooky Sugar" was released in December of 2003.Check

Can
you tell us about your album 'Spooky Sugar'? When did you record it?
Are you satisfied with it?
Spooky
Sugar was recorded from July to September of 2003 & released in December.
We were the winners of the big Pittsburgh area battle of the bands,
called the "Graffiti Rock Challenge" & part of the prize was 60 hours
of recording time & CD pressing. This went toward 'Spooky Sugar' & we
are very happy with the quality & energy of the songs & the recording.
After hearing the early mixes of the disc, Angel O kept mentioning that
it sounds both 'spooky' & 'sugary', then the title was born!
What
about the art-work? Is there any special meaning behind all these cats?
The artwork was put together by me & Ang...as far as the cats galore
goes, sometimes cats seem very mystical, alien, & quite spooky...at
least when I'm intoxicated!
We
can feel early glam rock influences in your music, what bands influenced
the SCIENCE FICTION IDOLS?
Early
glam is definitely an influence...New York Dolls, KISS, Alice, Cheap
Trick, Slade, T Rex, Aerosmith...& some of the better 80's stuff like
Hanoi Rocks, GnR, etc...
With
what kind of bands do you usually play with there? Is there any band
you feel close to?
We play with a variety of bands...anything from metal to punk to shoegazer
type indie rock -- there really isn't any bands in the Pittsburgh area
with a sound or style like ours.
What
are the last records you enjoyed?
"The Wildhearts Must Be Destroyed" is almost a perfect record, "No Regrets"
by Hardcore Superstar is very good...I've also been listening to Cheap
Trick's debut a lot lately...I also dig the Murderdolls CD.
What
is the biggest and smallest audience you ever played for?
The
largest crowd was approximately 600 people, when we won the Graffit
Rock Challenge -- the smallest crowd was probably 10 - 15 people at
a club in New Jersey.
Any
chance to see you live in Europe soon?
We would love, LOVE to go to Europe, but until we get some backing,
it's financially impossible.
Anything
else to add?
We
love sites & zines like yours...you help to keep real rock n roll alive!
Persistence is the key...be true to yourself & it will pay off -- never
give up!!
