You
will probably here from The HIGH-SCHOOL MOTHERFUCKERS! in the next months...
If you're into punk rock'n'roll, glam or garage you'll probably enjoy
their music since you'll find traces of all these styles in their first
EP "want some!?".
Can
you introduce HIGH-SCHOOL MOTHERFUCKERS! ? Some of you also play in
SUCKERSTARZ, don't you?
Stuffy : We started the band in late 2002 as a RAMONES tribute band
first, but we quickly started to write our own songs and we didn't stop
since that day! So now we don't play the cover songs as much as we used
to do. Indeed, Pam and I are also playing in SUCKERSTARZ! This band
started before HSMF. We recorded a 6 song CD in Hungary which was released
in Japan by Myrmecoelo records(ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN, ADAM WEST...)
It just came out in France on Anvil corp as a split cd with SONICDOLLZ
(the other band of the singer Blondie.)
How
come Jean Beauvoir played with you during your first gig ?
Stuffy : This was a friend's idea, she wanted to put up a RAMONES night
with music, games, and so on ... So we created HSMF for that occasion
and as we wanted something original we thought that having Jean Beauvoir
as a guest would be perfect. I met him before in Paris when he was doing
the promotion for his solo album so I phoned him in L.A to ask him if
he'd be ok for that and he agreed without any hesitation! Since he had
been a producer and songwriter for the RAMONES, he really enjoyed the
idea. At that time he had to go to Berlin for his business so he stopped
by Paris for this memorable night! We practiced together for a little
hour and he came to play 3 RAMONES songs with us on the night after.
Did
you play many gigs after that ?
Stuffy : Not really for the reason that the band is quite recent and
it took some time to write more songs, plan things, find the right musicians,
and so on... and projects going nowhere don't help! But so far it's
been quite cool and "one shot"!
So,
the Ramones influence is obvious, but what other bands influenced you
and what bands have you enjoyed lately ?
Stuffy
: The Scandinavian scene mostly these last months (Backyard Babies,
Psychopunch, Gluecifer, Turbonegro, Trashcan Darlings, The Bones etc…)
other than that, the whole 80s/90s glam scene (Poison, Hollywood Teasze,
Pretty Boy Floyd, Trash Brats, Big Bang Babies, Queeny Blast Pop, Dogs
D'Amour...) Oh, and not to forget: Junkies and Sonicdollz !
Your
song " spider " sounds more glam pop than the other ones, will you write
other songs in that style in the future ?
Stuffy : I think so. Because our style is not punk or glam or rock'n'roll
or garage but all of that at the same time. Then, sometimes it just
happens that all the ingredients of one of these styles can be found
in a song which will be considered as a glam song or a punk one for
instance. It just depends on our mood !
Do
you think that rock'n'roll is back like the media say or do you think
that it's just a trend ?
Stuffy
: Pfff… It's a difficult question since I evolve in a rock environment
(the band, my friends, the shows, the internet…) and as a consequence
I'm not always aware of what is going on in the "real life"!! If rock
means Kyo, Sum 41, Avril Lavigne or Blink 182, so yeah but I guess those
kind of bands have always existed… We'll be able to say that things
have changed when Backyard Babies will play the Zenith in Paris which
is not the case right now !... And bands like the White Stripes, The
Strokes... they're ok for 5 minutes but they get really boring after
a while especially when you hear them all day on the radio. The media
talk about them as the rock revolution but they can't fool us!!
What
are the projects of the band ?
Stuffy : Put out the album, playing as much as we can and release a
lot of seven inches !!!
Something
else to add ?
Stuffy
: Thanks to you for the interview and to the people who will read it!
I hope we'll meet soon and have a drink together !!
