BRILLIANT SINS
Kim (vocals) talks about the band, their lyrics, animal rights and everything
you need to know about the BRILLIANT SINS...
Let's start with a little
introduction...
www.brilliantsins.com ...
that tells you more than you'll ever need to know!
Two members were originally from Wales U.K, did
you decide to move to L.A because of music? Wasn't it possible to have a
great band in Wales like The MANIC STREET PREACHERS managed to
do?
When we moved to L.A., Brilliant Sins hadn't even been formed so it's
not as if we attempted to get recognized in Wales. Besides, at the time there
wasn't a Welsh music scene like there is today. Darren came to L.A . via
a tour with a band he was playing for. I came here because I was bored.
You have one song in a movie, can you tell us
more about that?
A few years ago, our song "I'd Rather Be A Porn Star" was chosen by
Joe Eszterhas (screenwriter of movies like "Basic Instinct" and "Jagged Edge")
for the soundtrack of his movie "Burn Hollywood Burn" and the same song is
featured in a new movie called "Nudity Required" which was recently shown
at the Sundance Film Festival.
How would you describe your
music?
I think I'll defer to our website on this one because I couldn't describe
it any better. "Think of a mix of Led Zeppelin's colour and dynamics; the
Sex Pistols' arrogant, brazen attitude; The Who's explosive energy. Throw
in some great bridges, melodic middle eights, inventive codas and better
lyrics than anyone else and you have Brilliant Sins."
You have one song called 'Fur Is Dead' and you're
featured a punk rock animal rights benefit CD. When did you chose to live
a cruelty-free lifestyle? One can usually find many vegans/vegetarians in
radical punk/hardcore bands, but do you know many veggie rock'n'rollers
there?
I think it was about 4/5 years ago that we became vegetarian and a
year or two later became vegan. I'm sorry to say that on a personal level,
I don't know any veggie rockers in LA. However, you do have people like Chrissie
Hynde and Poison's Rikki Rocket who are veggie and very involved in the animal
rights movement.
Can you explain the song 'I'd
Rather Be a Porn Star'?
The idea for the lyrics came from the fact that in recent years there
seems to have been a trend of legitimate actresses and female singers appearing
half naked on magazine covers and in movies. I got totally sick of seeing
it because these same women take themselves so seriously, when in fact, they
are no different to models in Playboy or the women of pornography. They're
all using sex as a tool to promote themselves. I've got no problem with porn,
but I do have a problem with hypocrisy. I used the song to take shots at
all the fakery in the entertainment industry.
What bands have you enjoyed
lately?
Darren listens to a lot of stuff but I tend not to listen to music
very much. However, when in doubt there's always The Who or Manic Street
Preachers.
What are your projects?
At the moment we're just focusing on getting songs used for TV and
film.
Anything else to add?
Yeah ... check out the Hell On Earth page on our website and start
doing something about it!
