The
Beauty School Dropouts
'Time For You To Go'
(website)
While punk rock has turned into something commercial these last years
and while the new bands just offer us little songs and dress in dubious
clothes, a few other bands try to cling to the original punk rock spirit.
The BEAUTY SCHOOL DROPOUTS from NYC are one of these bands and play the
8 songs of this new album with the faith and enthusiasm of a beginner.
The RAMONES (but also BUZZCOCKS and DEAD BOYS) influence cannot be disavowed
and you can enjoy the kind of catchy choruses and implacable guitar riffs
that made Joey and his (false) brothers famous. Chee (bass/vocals), Steve
(guitar/vocals) and Gino (drums) already offered us a brilliant version
of 'Too Much Junkie Business'(Johnny Thunders and The HEARTBREAKERS)
on their first record and this time, they chose The UNDERTONES ('Teenage
Kicks') and more surprisingly Elvis Presley ('Suspicious Minds')
for this album. Those two cover songs perfectly fit in the album and even
though I don't know a lot about the music of the most famous Memphis citizen,
this cover song could make me look at the King's works!!! The RAMONEsque
'Time For You To Go' puts an end to this short but excellent CD,
and since I've been asked in a nice way, I guess that it's time for me
to go.
/Franckie.
